X Presents… Made in Goldsmiths Exhibition

X Presents… Made in Goldsmiths

Private View 1st March, 19:00 – 21:00. The exhibition will remain open for 2nd – 11th March , excluding weekends, 10:00 – 17:00.

‘What is it to Receive? A discussion with the artists (ex-students) concerning the works in the show and their contingent relationship with Goldsmiths’ – Talk chaired by Helen Kaplinsky, 1st March, 18:00 – 19:00.

When a group of art graduates is offered the opportunity to return back to the institutional space they had left, holding a certificate to prove their enhanced potentiality as artists and a promise of future success within the cultural field, it only seems appropriate to do so by centering suspicions and enquiries about learning spaces on Goldsmiths itself.

As difficult as it may seem to actually calculate the amount of art graduates that this establishment has welcomed and then released upon an international network of diverse practices, the opportunity to investigate it as a mechanism of validation for acquired expertise in a time of socio-economic instability appears critical in examining its status of credibility.

By being able to occupy this platform as a space of collaboration and through the initiation of dialogues around educational concerns, the labeling of an institution as a mere “manufacturing machine” can be expanded into a wider context of enquiries concerning its mode of function.

What is to be “Made in Goldsmiths”, to produce work in the name of Goldsmiths and then present yourself again within its vicinity?

X Presents… To Culture With Love Exhibition

For those of you in Germany at the moment. X Presents… To Culture With Love exhibition opens today!

13th – 16th February 2011 at the Campus Pappelallee, Pappelallee 8-9, 14469 Potsdam, Germany.

When the artwork became the product to be exchanged in a field of shifting market forces, economic benefit and hierarchies of entrepreneurial status, being an artist became a ‘state of employment’.

By introducing the notion of cultural labor and its respective evaluation, as the artwork’s content, this exhibition attempts to explore the conditions of ‘employment’ for young cultural workers.

Educational institutes aiming at extending one’s productive potentiality and internships appearing to enrich one’s working experience, can be approached as exemplar social structures of this market. By configuring enquiries around the desire to succeed within the cultural field, this exhibition attempts to unfold the ‘manufacturing’ of artists into employees and the use of authoritative status within working conditions.

X Presents… Brixton Photo Booth Tonight

X Presents… Brixton Photo Booth

3rd & 5th February 2011 at the Brixton Market.

X Presents… presents an exciting new project starting this February. We will be in the Brixton Covered Market taking professional photographs of everybody who would like a shot of their best side. A firm nod toward Harry Jacobs’ photo archive of immigrants living in the area 50 years ago, we will update his project, in an age of hyper-connected digital networking, the analogue artifact is now almost a fetishistic object, in other words, an image of you has little value compared with a photographic print. Photographs from Harry Jacobs’ studio were often posed infront of idyllic English country backdrops, with white picket fence, bakerlight telephones and fake plastic flowers as props, his clients would often wear their work institution clothes, or fine dresses and suits. Prints would be sent back home to mums & dads, brothers & sisters to prove their success and wellbeing in the big city.

The joy of being documented professionally is what people will gain from our reconstitution of his studio. Our subjects will be considered, pampered and propped up, with their likenesses being archived online, here. The process of having your photograph taken is increasingly becoming more alien to most of us, it may happen every year at school, but not after. Candid snapshots from mobile phones, and staged computerscreen camera shots are the two processes that reproduce our own images in 21st century life. Come down to brixton arcade, and have your photograph taken.
